Fire crews called as wind turbine bursts into flames near farm

A wind turbine has gone up in flames close to a farm near a nature reserve in Aberdeenshire.

Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were called to the scene of the blaze north of St Cyrus Nature Reserve.

The fire started around 2.14pm on Wednesday, with flames and smoke seen billowing from the back of the turbine propeller.

Two fire engines were called to the turbine, around 18.5m in height, at the reserve near Mains of Lauriston.

Emergency services remain at the scene but have said “no firefighting was required”.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: ” We were alerted at 2.14pm on Wednesday, November 23 to reports of a fire affecting a wind turbine near Mains of Lauriston, Aberdeenshire.

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene, where crews remain onsite and are liaising with onsite personnel to make the area safe.

“No firefighting was required.”
