Aberdeen’s Highland Games have been cancelled due to heavy rain overnight.

Aberdeen City Council confirmed the event at Hazlehead Park on Sunday was no longer going ahead hours before it was scheduled to begin.

Around 10,000 people were set to attend.

Weather conditions mean the event site and car park is unsafe for those planning to attend.

People who purchased tickets will be due refunds over the course of next week.

The Highland Games was to feature a range of events including Pipe Band competitions, Tug o’ War to Highland Dancing.

A spokesperson for Aberdeen City Council said: “Unfortunately, due to heavier than forecast rain overnight making the event site and car park unsafe, the Highland Games at Hazlehead Park, due to take place today, has been cancelled.”
