Rail services to be disrupted as work continues on new airport station

Network Rail will carry out 54 hours of continuous work on the new Inverness Airport train station over the weekend.

Trains between Aberdeen and Inverness to be disrupted amid overnight work on airport station Twitter

Rail services in the Highlands will be disrupted over the weekend as work to build a new £14m station at Inverness Airport continues.

Network Rail will carry out 54 hours of continuous work from Friday night until Monday morning which cannot be undertaken while the railway is open.

As a result, services between Aberdeen and Inverness will be disrupted for travellers.

Bus replacements will be in place between Inverness and Nairn and Inverness and Elgin on Saturday, with an Inverness and Nairn bus also available on Sunday.

Passengers have been urged to check their journey before they travel on the ScotRail website.

Work set to be undertaken this weekend includes the demolition of a masonry road bridge to the east of the site, the installation of drainage and work to the platform.

Scheduled to be completed in December, the new airport train station will feature two platforms with step free access via a footbridge with lifts.

The station will have 64 parking spaces, with ten electric charging facilities, four disabled spaces and cycle parking.

A new access road to the station will be constructed for motorists, with access to both platforms for pedestrians and cyclists.

David Millar, project manager for Network Rail said: “The construction of Inverness Airport Station continues to gather momentum and this weekend marks a significant point in the project. The removal of the old masonry arch bridge and connecting the passing loop are both important milestones in the delivery of the new station.

“We apologise for any inconvenience while the line is closed this weekend both to those intending to travel and to anyone who lives close to the site where we will be working continuously from Friday night until Monday morning.

“We appreciate your patience while we deliver this important addition to the area’s transport infrastructure.”
