Motorists are facing no alternative route after a one-vehicle crash closed a road in the Isle of Lewis.

Police were alerted to a one-vehicle collision shortly after 11am on Tuesday on the A859 in Balallan.

Fire and ambulance crews also attended the scene with the road closed in both directions.

Police confirmed no alternative route is available to drivers following the incident and the road is likely to remain shut for “several hours”.

It comes amid a fresh amber weather warning from the Met Office with Storm Jocelyn set to sweep across Scotland.

Storm Isha brought extreme winds and heavy rain causing travel disruption on rail, ferry and flight services.

The Salvation Army’s Facebook page in Stornoway announced their hall would be open to anyone requiring refreshments or rest due to the accident.

The post read: “Due to recent incident in Balallan on the A859 and the upcoming AMBER Met Officer warning, our hall on Bayhead is open until 10pm for those needing a warm dry place.

“Hot drinks, food and snacks available to everyone who needs us… stay safe!”

“Police, SFRS and SAS attended the incident.

“The A859 road at Balallan is closed in both directions and likely to remain closed for several hours.
