A hunt has been launched after a suspected deer poaching incident in the Highlands.
A female red deer was found to be clearly suffering from injuries after being shot during the morning of August 19, in the upper Glen Etive area of Lochaber.
The animal had managed to evade capture after being shot but was suffering, and had to be humanely killed by a local gamekeeper.
Enquiries have confirmed that there was no out of season stalking ongoing around the time and a police investigation is ongoing.
Wildlife crime officer Constable Daniel Sutherland said: “I would urge anyone who was in the area and may have seen anything suspicious to get in touch with us.
“This deer had clearly been shot and then was able to evade capture whilst severely injured.
“This action was reckless and caused the animal needless suffering before it was found and dispatched.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 101 quoting incident number CR/156989/23 or you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.”
