Diver whose body was found near battleship wreck named

A search operation was launched after Paul Smith from Greater Manchester failed to return from a dive off Orkney.

Police have named the diver whose body was found in Orkney last month.

Paul Smith had been reported missing near the wreck of the German battleship SMS Markgraf on September 28.

Coastguard, lifeboat and Royal Navy crews recovered the man’s body on October 16. On Wednesday, October 25, he was named.

Police Scotland said the family of Mr Smith, who is from the Greater Manchester area, has been informed.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “The identity of the diver whose body was recovered near the island of Cava, in the Scapa Flow area on Monday, October 16 can now be confirmed as Paul Smith, aged 70.

“His relatives are aware.”
