Man dies after suffering injuries at windfarm building site

Ambulance, coastguard and police crews attended the incident on Sunday morning but the man died as a result of his injuries.

A man has died after suffering injuries at a windfarm construction site in Shetland.

The 23-year-old was attended to by emergency crews following the incident at the SSE Renewables-operated site in the Upper Kergord area on Sunday morning.

Ambulance and police services attended at around 10.15am, however the man – a contractor for BAM Nuttall – was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The Health and Safety Executive will be informed once an initial investigation is carried out.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and the Health and Safety Executive will be informed in due course.”

SSE is currently building the 450 megawatt Viking Energy wind farm to link up with the HVDC transmission link between Shetland and the Scottish mainland.

The firm’s head of onshore projects, Derek Hastings, said: “We are devastated by today’s news and our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the young man who tragically died.

“We are working closely with BAM Nuttall and the relevant authorities to understand what happened.”
