A man has died after falling on a mountain on the Isle of Skye.

Police were called to reports of a casualty having fallen at the 3,064ft (933m) Coire a’ Bhasteir, in the Cuillin range, at around 3pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services including Skye Mountain Rescue attended but the 80-year-old was pronounce dead at the scene.

Stornoway rescue helicopter R948, 20 mountain rescue personnel, and several passing climbers all assisted in evacuating the body from the mountain, Skye Mountain Rescue said.

“On Wednesday afternoon, the team responded to a report of a fallen climber in Coire a’ Bhasteir,” a spokesperson said.

“Sadly, the experienced male’s injuries were fatal.

“Our thoughts go out to the climber’s family and friends.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers received a report of a man having fallen at Coire a’ Bhasteir on the Isle of Skye around 3.05pm on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.

“Emergency services attended, and an 80-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
