Garvault House: Remote Scots hotel features in Channel 4 series The World's Most Secret Hotels

A hotel billing itself as the most remote in mainland Britain has found itself in the spotlight thanks to a new television series.

Garvault House sits around eight miles outside of Kinbrace, inviting guests to “live off grid” in the “great wilderness” of Scotland.

Run by archaeologists Eva and Adrian Aderyn, the hotel is surrounded by remnants of stone-age huts and an iron-age hill fort.

It’s described as offering “uninterrupted views” of the lochs, hills and clear skies, making it perfect for stargazing, with red deer, otters and eagles counted among the local wildlife.

The property features alongside underwater retreats, remote desert lodges and tree-top cabins across Sweden, Uruguay and Cambodia in new Channel 4 series The World’s Most Secret Hotels.

The isolated hotel is a draw for eco-conscious travellers, completely cut off from the national grid and water board.

It uses solar power and salt water batteries, with a back-up generator in the winter, while water is diverted from a local spring and waste filtered through a nearby reed bed.

Sheets and towels are hung out to air-dry on washing lines and are left un-ironed to save on electricity.

Unlike most hotels, there are no TVs or tea or coffee in the rooms.

Instead, there is a cosy library, board games and a piano in the drawing room for an evening singalong – or guests can unwind with a dram of local whisky in the bar.

The nearest supermarket is an hour’s drive away, so cook and barman Ollie Hofer makes meals using seasonal produce from local farms.

The dining room also boasts a marble breakfast table dating back more than 120 years from the famous Cafe Mozart in Vienna, which boasted writers Orson Welles and Graham Greene amongst its clientele.

For some extra peace and quiet, Garvault House even has a remote bothy, which the owners say is a perfect place to watch the sunset.

The hotel’s website features a profound quote from eight-year-old guest Pablo, who said “you can walk into the nothing” there.
