A dream business opportunity on a famous island airport is up for grabs, after being extended due to significant interest.
The terminal at Barra Airport, which is undergoing a £1.5m refurbishment, is on the market for a team to take over a new café operation.
Highlands and Islands Airports Litd (HIAL) has extended the closing date for applications to June 21.
Barra Airport has attracted global fame for its beach runway landings, and provided lifeline services to the island while also being a popular tourist attraction.
The development includes a new, extended café catering concession, which the airport team believes can play a significant role in supporting tourism facilities on the island.
HIAL believes that, after welcoming 11,000 passengers in 2022-23, there is “significant scope” to generate café business for locals and passing tourists.
“The airport attracts worldwide interest due to that unique beach setting and we want our new café concession operation to build on that popularity,” said Barra Airport manager, Michael Galbraith.
“Interest levels have been significant and because of that we wanted to extend the deadline for people to get involved in order to be fair to all parties who have come forward looking to get involved in the project.”
Bosses anticipate that the new terminal facilities will provide opportunities for increased footfall.
The seating area is planned to have good views over the beach and of the aircraft landing and taking off from the nearby runway.
Those interested in operating the new café as a business can submit tender applications by noon on Wednesday, June 21.
The listing is available on HIAL’s website.
