A body has been found in the search for a missing “experienced” hillwalker in the Highlands.

Ruth Betts left her hotel in Fort William on Wednesday, intending to walk the Mamores but failed to return and concerns are growing for her welfare.

The 64-year-old was last seen in her walking gear and carrying a green and grey rucksack.

Police Scotland said the experienced hillwalker was equipped for a day in the hills but when she failed to return concerns grew for her welfare.

Her disappearance prompted a multi-agency search with local mountain rescue, Coastguard and the Search and Rescue Dogs Association operating in the area.

At around 7.15pm on Thursday, July 25, a body was found on An Garbhanach near Kinlochleven.

Formal identification is yet to take place but police said Ms Betts’ family had been made aware.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
