Street lights in the Western Isles could be switched off for six months a year as part of budget cut plans.

The council said it was considering the move after approving £1.439m of savings on Thursday. It said it was forced to make cuts because of a reduction in funding from the Scottish Government.

Councillors approved a raft of measures on Thursday, including cuts to roads maintenance and no longer having specialist teachers travelling between primary schools.

Increased charges will be brought in at Stornoway Abattoir while discounts on the inter-island ferry services will be scrapped.

Council leader Angus Campbell said: "This has undoubtedly been a difficult process for the [council] and our communities.

"Following extensive consultation we have listened carefully to our communities and their priorities. I believe that this has been reflected in the outcome of the budget.

"This has been challenging and will continue to be in the foreseeable future. There is no sign of an end to austerity for local government."
