Firefighters injured when two fire engines crashed off the road and overturned remain in hospital.

The engines were heading to a car crash when they left the B9006 near Inverness on Saturday morning.

Five of the nine firefighters travelling in the vehicles were taken to hospital, with two cut free by their colleagues.

Three firefighters remain in hospital but their injures are not life-threatening or life-changing, the fire service said.

A spokesman added: "At 7am on Saturday, Inverness control were advised of a road traffic accident on the B9006 at Cantraybruich.

"They subsequently dispatched two appliances from Inverness fire station to attend. At 7.16am, while en-route to the incident under blue light conditions, both appliances left the road at Newlands of Culloden.

"Six crew members were able to exit the vehicles. Two crew members were trapped inside an appliance for a period before being released by colleagues."

Both fire engines are off the road and extra vehicles from Aberdeen and Dundee have temporarily been moved to Inverness as cover.
