Sharon Rooney and Ncuti Gatwa set to become Scotland's Barbie and Ken

The Scottish actors will both star in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Barbie movie, due to be released in summer.

Scottish actors Sharon Rooney and Ncuti Gatwa set to appear in upcoming Greta Gerwig Barbie movie Mattel/Warner Bros.

Scottish moviegoers looking to watch the highly-anticipated live-action Barbie movie, coming this July, can look forward to two familiar faces playing two of the dolls.

Sharon Rooney, star of the popular early 2000s show My Mad Fat Diary, and Ncuti Gatwa, the newest Doctor on the BBC’s Doctor Who, will appear in the upcoming movie.

While it is unknown how central their roles in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster are, posters for both characters were dropped on Tuesday – alongside a trailer.

Glaswegian actress Rooney, who made a name for herself in Two Doors Down and Disney’s live-action remake of Dumbo, is set to play a Barbie who is also a lawyer.

After it was revealed she would be part of the project in 2022, she described it as a “dream come true”.

“Don’t let me ever hear you say dreams don’t come true because they do,” she said at the time.

“So buy that hot pink power suit and go for your dreams because magic things happen when you believe in you.

“Barbie, the best adventure yet.”

Gatwa, 30, moved to Edinburgh and then Dunfermline when he was just two with his Rwandan family.

He has since starred in some of the UK’s biggest shows, including Netflix hit Sex Education, and in 2022 was announced as the first black Doctor and fourth Scot to take on the iconic role of the Time Lord.

Gatwa is now set to take on the role of Cowboy Ken, or guitar-playing Ken.

Posting to his Instagram on Tuesday, he wrote: “Wanna go for a ride?….. Well you’ll have to wait until July 21 but it’ll be the most fun you’ve had. Promise.”

The film, directed by Oscar-nominated actor and director Greta Gerwig, stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the primary Ken and Barbie.

Moviegoers will also see Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan as diplomat Barbie, Ana Cruz Kayne as Supreme Court Justice Barbie, The Crown’s Emerald Fennell as Midge (Barbie’s best friend), and Scott Evans as a cowboy hat-wearing Ken.

Michael Cera will appear as Ken’s friend Allan, Issa Rae will play president Barbie and Sex Education star Emma Mackey will portray a Barbie with a Nobel Prize in physics.

Human characters will be played by Ugly Betty actress America Ferrera, Elf actor Will Ferrell, Stath Lets Flats star Jamie Demetriou and Sex Education’s Connor Swindells.

Dame Helen Mirren is taking on the role of voice narrator, alongside Dua Lipa as a mermaid Barbie, who also performed some of the songs recorded for the film.

Barbie is due to be released in cinemas on July 21.
