A Hollywood war blockbuster shot in Glasgow has been nominated for the top prize at Bafta’s British Academy Film Awards.
1917, which was partly filmed at Govan Graving Docks, is in the running for Best Film.
The epic WWI drama has also been nominated for Outstanding British Film, Original Score, Cinematography, and Best Director for Sam Mendes.
1917, which follows two young soldiers tasked to hand-deliver a message to a battalion during the height of the First World War, was penned by Mendes and Glasgow-born screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns – who first gained work experience on the set of Taggart.
The movie has already won Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director – Motion Picture at this year’s Golden Globes.
Joker leads the Bafta nominations with 11 nods.
The origin story of the comic book villain, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, is in the running for Best Film, Leading Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, Original Score, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Make-up and Hair, Sound, and Casting.
It is closely followed by Martin Scorsese’s gangster story The Irishman and Quentin Tarantino’s ninth film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, which both scored ten nominations and will also compete in the Best Film category.
Wild Rose, which tells the story of an aspiring country singer and single mother-of-two from Glasgow, is also in the running for an award.
Jessie Buckley will go head-to-head with Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women), Charlize Theron (Bombshell) and Renee Zellweger (Judy) for the Leading Actress gong.
Scots actor Jack Lowden (Dunkirk, Mary Queen of Scots) has also been nominated for the Rising Star Award.
The shortlist, which honours young performers who have “demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition”, also features Awkwafina (The Farewell), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Kelvin Harrison Jr (Waves), and Michael Ward (Top Boy).
This year’s Bafta ceremony will be hosted by Graham Norton and takes place on February 2.
