Cher has received hundreds of messages of condolence after appearing to announce her mother’s death.
The singer shared a brief tweet with her four million followers which said: “Mom is gone.”
In September, Cher said her mum Georgia Holt had been unwell, in and out of hospital, most recently with pneumonia.
The 96-year-old singer and actor is credited for teaching her daughter to sing.
“Mom’s been sick off and on,” Cher said earlier this year, “She just got out of [hospital]. She had pneumonia. She’s getting better.”
Holt was the subject of the documentary Dear Mom, Love Cher, executive produced by her daughter in 2013.
Fans of Cher and her mother took to social media to share their condolences with the singer.
One wrote: “I’m so very sorry to hear that your beloved mother has passed. My heart goes out to you. What a blessing to have had her in your life for as long as you did.”
Holt, a model as well as an actor and singer-songwriter, famously appeared in the sitcom I Love Lucy.
She leaves behind two children, her daughter Cher and her sister Georganne LaPiere.
