A women’s football match in Fife was abandoned after police were called to reports of an assault.

Police were called to Pitreavie pitches, on Queensferry Road, at around 3.30pm on Sunday after a fight broke out during a SWFL East match between Dunfermline Athletic Ladies and Armadale Thistle Ladies.

It is understood the fight broke out around the 60-minute mark, when the score was 2-0 to Armadale Thistle Ladies.

Scottish Women’s Football condemned the incident, and confirmed it had launched a full investigation with an aim of beginning disciplinary proceedings.

A spokesperson for the football association said: “SWF understands police were called to investigate alleged violent conduct at a match in the SWFL East on Sunday.

While we cannot comment on any police investigations, SWF are clear that violence has absolutely no place in football and our own investigation into the incident will examine all accounts and the referees report before enacting full disciplinary proceedings.

“Scottish Women’s Football is proud of the positive role our clubs play in providing powerful role models and encouraging young women into the sport, and therefore there must be a zero-tolerance approach to any behaviours from spectators, coaches or players who tarnish that reputation women have worked so hard to foster over the last 50 years.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 3.30pm on Sunday, October 22, 2023 officers were called to the following a report of an assault

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
