A Wetherspoons pub has been forced to close ‘until further notice’ after damage caused during works for the Edinburgh tramline extension.

The Foot of The Walk in Leith was forced to close at around 9pm on Thursday after a damaged sewer pipe beneath the premises burst.

It is understood that the damage was caused during the building works for the Edinburgh tramline extension.

A representative for the JD Wetherspoon pub said that they will remain closed “until further notice” as Scottish Water have been “slow” at resolving the issue.

A spokesperson said: “This evening the decision was made to close Pub 1135 [The Foot of the Walk, Leith] until further notice due to the sewage leak under the premises.

“We closed the premises at 9pm. This cause of the leak is a damaged sewer pipe under the premises.

“Unfortunately, this closure is due to circumstances out with our control as the pipe is the responsibility of Scottish Water who have been slow at resolving the issue.

“Apparently the sewer pipe under the building was damaged by building works when installing the tramline extension on the street.”
