Two people are in a serious condition in hospital following a crash in the Scottish Borders.

A 21-year-old man and 49-year-old woman were rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in the early hours of Wednesday morning after the incident on the A68, which involved a white Ford Fiesta.

Road policing officers shut down the junction between Soutra and Gilston shortly after 4.30am for almost seven hours while an initial probe got under way.

Both are said to be in a “serious but stable condition”, however a full in investigation has now been opened, Police Scotland confirmed.

Sergeant Iain McIntyre said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time who either saw what happened or saw the white Ford Focus prior to the crash.

“Likewise, anyone with dash cam footage of the A68 around 4.30am on Wednesday, please review it and bring anything relevant to our attention.”
