Edinburgh’s Royal Mile has been closed as firefighters battle a blaze at a tenement building.
Emergency services raced to the Royal Mile in Edinburgh on Thursday afternoon following reports of a fire.
Police confirmed that Canongate in Edinburgh was closed as well as surrounding roads in the area.
Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.
The extent of the damage and whether there are any casualties is currently unknown.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Canongate in Edinburgh is closed due to a fire. Road closures are in place. Drivers should use an alternative route.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 12.06pm on Thursday, November 9 to reports of a fire within a ground floor flat in Edinburgh.
“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the city’s Canongate, where firefighters extinguished the fire and worked to make the area safe before leaving the scene.
