A 17-year-old Queensland koala at Edinburgh Zoo has died.

The koala, named Goonaroo, had been experiencing age-related health problems.

In December last year, he underwent an operation to remove his right eye.

However, the zoo said that he continued to have chronic problems with his remaining eye and was not responding well to treatment.

Following a review of his overall wellbeing and quality of life by the zoo’s vets and keepers, it was advised that Goonaroo should be put to sleep.

In a statement, Edinburgh Zoo said: “Goonaroo was a real character who fathered three joeys as part of the international species breeding programme.

“He will be missed by everyone here at the zoo and our thoughts are with all those who cared for him.”
