A man has been arrested and others fled after a police car collided with a stolen vehicle which allegedly had an “axe” inside after a morning pursuit on a busy street in Edinburgh.

At around 9.50am on Thursday, a vehicle which had been reported stolen failed to stop when signalled by officers.

The vehicle was pursued by officers and was stopped when a marked police car collided with it on the city’s London Road, beside Meadowbank retail park.

Bystanders at the scene said that an “axe” was seen inside the vehicle and police had “one man on the ground while others got away”.

Police confirmed that a man had been arrested and enquiries were ongoing to trace others who left the scene immediately following the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A vehicle, which had been reported stolen, failed to stop when signalled by officers around 9.50am on Thursday, October 13.

“The vehicle was pursued and subsequently brought to a stop on London Road after a collision involving a marked police vehicle.

“One man has been arrested and enquiries are ongoing to trace others who left the scene immediately following the incident.”
