A pensioner has been charged after a fire was started deliberately outside a shop in the Scottish Borders.

Emergency services were called to Jedburgh’s High Street at around 1.40am on Tuesday morning.

The fire was safely extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and no one was injured as a result.

On Wednesday, police confirmed a 72-year-old man has since been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

A spokesperson said: “A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a deliberate fire outside a shop in Jedburgh.

“The incident happened on High Street around 1.40am on Tuesday, October 25.

“The 72-year-old man has been released on undertaking to appear at Jedburgh Sheriff Court at a later date. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
