A man has been taken to hospital after being attacked with a weapon in broad daylight outside a busy Edinburgh supermarket.

The 39-year-old was on a footpath near Aldi between Gorgie and Slateford when he was targeted by the attacker shortly after 1.30pm on Wednesday, June 8.

He was assaulted with the unknown object before the suspect fled, forcing concerned passers-by to phone for emergency services.

The victim was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment but was later released.

Police have now launched an appeal for witnesses in an effort to trace the man responsible.

Detective constable William Doughty, from Corstorphine CID, said: “This incident happened during the day and we are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw what happened or who may be able to provide any information to contact us.”

DC Doughty added: “Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101, quoting number 1658 of Wednesday, June 8. Alternatively information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.”
