A man has died in hospital after suffering a head wound in a “fight” on Edinburgh’s Princes Street.

Wayne Elliot was found seriously injured near the Johnnie Walker premises on Saturday night after police were called to a disturbance at around 8.15pm.

The 53-year-old was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where medical staff described his condition as critical.

On Tuesday, the hospital confirmed to police Mr Elliot, originally from the Portsmouth area, had died.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with his death.

On Sunday, Police Scotland said officers were gathering and checking relevant CCTV footage.

Officers from Police Scotland’s Major Investigations Team is continuing to investigate the death, the force said.

The man arrested is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, August 18.
