A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder and abduction following an incident involving a police officer in Edinburgh.

Thomas Malone appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday where he made no plea in response to 19 charges.

The 27-year-old was charged with 12 road traffic offences including dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified, and failing to stop when required.

Malone, from Edinburgh, also faces separate charges of assault, theft of a motor vehicle and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody pending further examination.

He is due to appear in court again within eight days.

The appearance comes after a police officer was allegedly hit by a car while on foot at the Shell garage on Stenhouse Road on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old officer was seriously injured in the incident at around 7.25pm, which police said involved a stolen car which had a 16-year-old boy inside.
