Man and cat injured in blaze as firefighters evacuate block of flats

Firefighters were called to one fire at Gorgie City Farm and later to another on Gorgie Park Close in Edinburgh.

A man has been injured and a building has been evacuated following a blaze at a block of flats in Edinburgh.

Emergency services were called to Gorgie Park Close at around 8.17pm on Wednesday following reports of a fire.

Six fire trucks alongside specialist vehicles were sent to the scene and left the area at around 1am on Thursday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said a man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by Scottish Ambulance Service, while a cat was also treated for smoke inhalation using a “smokey paws” kit.

It was the second fire in the same area of Edinburgh on Wednesday after a blaze within a single-storey building at Gorgie City Farm.

Four trucks were called to the scene just before 6pm that day and left the area by 8.14pm.

The fires are not being treated as connected.

A SFRS spokesperson said about the fire on at Gorgie City Farm: “We were alerted at 5.59pm on Wednesday to reports of a fire within a single-storey stable building at a commercial premises on Gorgie Road in Edinburgh.

“Four appliances were mobilised where crews worked to prevent further fire spread before extinguishing the fire.

“There were no reported casualties and we left the scene at 8.14pm.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland added: “We were made aware of a fire at a stable at Gorgie City Farm off Gorgie Road in Edinburgh shortly after 6.25pm on Wednesday.

“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended to extinguish the fire. No one was injured.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

The SFRS said about the second fire: “We were alerted at 8.17pm on Wednesday to reports of a fire within a block of flats on Gorgie Park Close, Edinburgh.

“Six fire appliances and supporting specialist vehicles were mobilised to the scene where crews extinguished a fire within a first-floor flat of a four-storey building.

“One male casualty was rescued from the building by firefighters. He suffered moderate smoke inhalation and received treatment at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“All other residents were evacuated from the building and no further casualties were reported. A cat suffering from smoke inhalation was treated by firefighters using Smokey Paws kit.

“Crews left the scene around 1am after ensuring the area was made safe.”
