A lamb born with deformed front legs has died after being taken into a wildlife sanctuary.
Oreo was taken into the care of experts at Five Sisters Zoo earlier this month after a farmer appealed for help.
The lamb stunned staff by beginning her journey to walk and the zoo pledged to give her all the specialist care she required.
However, staff at the sanctuary announced on Monday that little Oreo has passed away.
The stricken animal had a poor immune system and “eventually couldn’t cope”.
A spokesperson for the zoo wrote: “We were very sad to lose Oreo our very special adopted lamb in the early hours of this morning, while in the vet’s care.
“Despite being born with leg deformities she was such a little fighter and anyone who ever met Oreo couldn’t help but fall in love with her, she was so special.
“With round-the-clock care and hand rearing work by the keepers we had really hoped she would make it.
“Sadly, she had a poor immune system, and despite antibiotics and veterinary treatment she eventually couldn’t cope and needed to be put to sleep.
“We will miss her but were grateful to be able to try our best to give her a chance.
“She has now gone to rainbow bridge where she will live eternally with her new legs.”
