As Edinburgh welcomes people from across the country and around the world, bins are overflowing and the streets are strewn with rubbish.
Any cleaning up has fallen to residents and volunteers as cleansing workers in the city strike in a nationwide dispute over pay.
Wednesday marked the sixth day of action while a revised pay offer of 5% is being considered. The strike is due to last until August 30.
Comedians from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe are to stage a benefit gig, in aid of the city’s striking refuse collectors, on Wednesday.
More than twenty other council areas will also be affected from later this week.
