Family 'distressed' after child's grave vandalised with spray paint

Detectives are investigating after a memorial plaque at Newbattle Cemetery was spray painted between March 1 and 14.

A family has been left “greatly distressed” after their child’s grave was vandalised with spray paint in Midlothian.

Police have launched an investigation following the “mindless” vandalism at Newbattle Cemetery in Dalkeith, which occurred between March 1 and 14.

Officers have established the child’s grave was “targeted”.

An appeal has now been launched for anyone who visited the cemetery or saw something suspicious in the area during the aforementioned dates to come forward.

Police constable John Fortune from Dalkeith Police Station said: “This mindless and concerning damage has caused great distress to the family.

“I am appealing to anyone who visits the cemetery or who may have seen anything suspicious to contact police”.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1754 of March 14, 2023, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
