Police Scotland’s bomb squad has been called and a road in West Lothian is closed after the discovery of a “suspect item” in the Union Canal.

At 7pm, Police Scotland said that the A89 in the Broxburn area is closed following the item being found in the water.

The canal paths are also closed with people being asked to avoid the area.

Officers are at the scene and a cordon has been erected.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The A89 in the Broxburn area is closed following a report of a suspect item being found in the Union Canal.

“The canal paths are also closed. Officers are at the scene and a cordon has been put in place. 

“People are asked to avoid the area. EOD is attending to assess the item.”
