Bomb crews were called to an East Lothian neighbourhood after concerning items were found in an abandoned car, police say.
Emergency teams were called to a residential area in Newbigging, Musselburgh on Thursday night following the discovery.
Authorities say an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team is at the scene.
Nearby homes have been evacuated and the area has been cordoned off, with members of the public being asked to avoid the area for their safety.
A statement by Police Scotland said: “We are in attendance in the Newbigging area of Musselburgh after items of concern were found within an abandoned vehicle.
“Emergency services and EOD are on scene. Nearby properties have been evacuated and a cordon has been set up.
“Please avoid the area for your own safety.”
