Two boys have been charged in connection with a fire which gutted a former primary school.

The blaze tore through the Wellbrae Primary School building in Forfar, Angus, at around 7pm on Saturday.

Around 50 firefighters were involved in battling the flames, which devastated the property in Wellbraehead.

On Monday, Police Scotland said two 12-year-old boys had been “charged in connection with a fire at building in Wellbraehead”.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the force added: “Enquiries are continuing and a report will be submitted to the youth justice assessor in due course.”

The school was closed by Angus Council in 2008 and has been used as a community church facility. It has been vacant for several years.

Property developers Taylor Shepherd Homes lodged a planning application with the council in June to convert the C-listed school building into 16 residential units.
