A rapist was caught after his victim recorded his threats moments before the attack.

Aaron Beresford pounced on the woman at a house in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, in March last year while the 27-year-old mother's children were upstairs.

A jury heard how the woman managed to use her mobile phone to catch Beresford making a number of vile remarks to her before the rape.

The voice clip helped bring the 29-year-old to trial at the High Court in Glasgow. Beresford insisted he had been set up, claiming he knew about the recording as the victim had asked him to make the comments.

Beresford shouted before being led handcuffed to the cells: "Rapists are disgusting ... I didn't do any of this."

The trial heard how Beresford and the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been known to each other. He turned up at her door last March 6 and went on to demand sex.

The court was told she captured him on her phone but initially did "not for one second" believe he would carry out the threats.

However, Beresford did and his victim recalled trying to push him off. She said: "It did not work ... I was telling him no."

The victim eventually got free and slapped her attacker. She later told her mother she had been raped.

Beresford, who denied rape, gave evidence during the trial. He told the court he was aware of the recording as the woman had wanted him to do it. This was branded "utterly ridiculous" by the prosecutor.

In his closing speech to the jury, advocate depute Alan MacKay said: "His explanation is an insult to your collective intelligence." Beresford started crying and loudly retching following the verdict.

Judge Sean Murphy QC deferred sentencing for reports.
