A man has appeared in court charged with shooting an underworld figure outside a school.

William Burns, 55, from Paisley, appeared at court on Tuesday charged with the attempted murder of Ross Sherlock, 33, in Bishopbriggs last September. It is claimed the alleged shooting was aggravated by serious organised crime.

Sherlock, a former friend of murdered gangland figure Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll, was allegedly shot as he went to pick up his daughter at St Helen's Primary School in the East Dunbartonshire town. He was treated in hospital after the incident.

Papers from Glasgow Sheriff Court allege that while acting with another, Burns "with face partially masked, did present a handgun at him and repeatedly discharge said handgun striking him on the body to his injury and to the danger of life". Prosecutors claim it was aggravated by serious and organised crime.

Burns appeared from custody at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday charged with assault to injury, danger of life and attempted murder. He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.
