A batch of 23,000 documents were published by Democrats on the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, relating to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
They include emails naming US President Donald Trump, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre and former UK ambassador to the United States Lord Peter Mandelson.
Many of the exchanges appear to involve Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, as well journalists investigating the disgraced financier.
The White House has branded the release of the documents a Democrat “smear”, accusing members of the Oversight Committee of creating a “fake narrative”.
So far, the documents which have attracted the most interest are:
Email from “The Duke”
The sender of one email to Ghislaine Maxwell, dated March 4 2011, is redacted apart from the words “The Duke”.
The email, assumed to come from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, says “I can’t take any more of this” after a newspaper said they would be running a story about his links to Epstein and Maxwell.
It reads: “What’s all this? I don’t know anything about this! You must SAY so please. This has NOTHING to do with me. I can’t take any more of this.”
It appears to be responding to an email from Maxwell, forwarding a request from a journalist asking for her comment on allegations involving her, Epstein, and the then-Prince Andrew.
The initial forwarded email from the journalist asked for a response claims that Maxwell introduced ‘Andrew’ to Virginia Giuffre – and that she directed Virginia to have sex with him.
An email from Epstein commenting on those allegations says: “Just got it two minutes ago. I’ve asked g (sic) lawyers to send a letter. Not sure… it’s so salcisous (sic) and ridiculous, im (sic) not sure how to respond, the only person she didn’t have sex with was Elvis.”
The “duke” later emails: “Please make sure that every statement or legal letter states clearly that I am NOT involved and that I knew and know NOTHING about any of these allegations.
“I can’t take any more of this my end.”
Mountbatten-Windsor has always denied any allegations of wrongdoing related to Virginia Giuffre.
Epstein wants to investigate Giuffre
Epstein can be seen in emails saying Buckingham Palace would “love it” if Giuffre was “proven to be a liar”.
In his email in July 2011, Epstein can be seen talking about “Andrew’s accuser” and asking someone to “send a reporter or reporters to investigate”.
The email reads: “… same as strauss khan (sic) is Andrew’s accuser, criminal record, total liar.”
It continues: “Send a reporter or reporters to investigate… the palace would love it, the girl in the photo, was nothing more than a telephone answerer, she was never 15, according to her version she worked for trump (sic), first at that age, at Mara Lago. It’s ridiculous.”
In a further email, Epstein adds: “The girl who accused Prince Andrew can also easily be proven to be a liar.
“I think Buckingham Palace would love it. You should task someone to investigate the girl Virginia Roberts, that has caused the Queen’s son all this agro (sic).
“I promise you she is a fraud. You and I will be able to go to ascot (sic) for the rest of our lives.”
Epstein insists picture of Giuffre and Andrew is real
Epstein appeared to confirm a photo of Giuffre with Andrew is real and claimed several of his staff had their picture taken with the former duke.
In an email from Epstein to a reporter in July 2011, he said: “Now that strauss kan (sic) girl will be shown to be a total liar.
“Maybe your paper should jump on and show that (redacted)’s allegations re andrew (sic) are the same, she also accused numerous people of having sex with her, dersh, ehud, etc. Not one paper had the balls to question her credibility.”
After the journalist confirmed they would be interested in the story, a further email from Epstein on the same day read: “The girl has fled the country with an outstanding arrest warrant. The da (sic) after she accused others, said in writing that she has no credibility, she was never 15 years old working for me, her story made it seem like she first worked for trump (sic) at that age and was met by ghislaine maxwell (sic).
“Total horseshit, the daily mail (sic) paid her money, they admitted it, with the statement that it took money to coax out the truth.
“Yes she was on my plane, and yes she had her picture taken with Andrew, as many of my employees have.
“I have never misled you, this girl is a total liar, they (sic) authorities should check her australian (sic) immigration form, you could talk to dershowitz (sic). I will ask if they will cooperate – Prince people.”
Trump “knew about the girls”
The newly released emails also include a message in which Epstein claimed that Trump “knew about the girls,” apparently referring to Trump’s previous claim that he banned Epstein from his Mar-a-Lago club for allegedly targeting young women who worked there.
“Trump said he asked me to resign, never a member ever. . of course he knew about the girls as he asked ghislaine to stop,” Epstein wrote to journalist and author Michael Wolff, months before his death in 2019.
Wolff told ITV News affiliate CNN: “I don’t quite remember the context. But I was engaged then in an in-depth conversation with Epstein about his relationship with Trump and this seems to be part of that conversation.”
The White House says the emails have been selectively released to create a “fake narrative”.
Furthermore, in a court deposition, Virginia Giuffre said under oath that she didn’t believe Trump had any knowledge of Epstein’s misconduct with underage girls.
Lord Mandelson in contact with Epstein as late as 2016
Lord Peter Mandelson was in contact with Epstein as late as 2016, according to the new emails, that also show he advised the paedophile financier against giving an interview to the BBC.
The Labour peer was sacked by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as the UK’s ambassador to the US in September after more details of his friendship with Epstein emerged.
The emails show Mandelson had sent supportive messages to Epstein even after he was convicted for soliciting a minor for prostitution in 2008.
In one exchange from November 2016, it appears Epstein wrote to Mandelson: “63 years old. You made it,” in an apparent reference to his birthday.
The messages also appear to suggest Mandelson warned Epstein to distance himself from the then-Prince Andrew.
Epstein appears to tell Lord Mandelson, “you were right about staying away from Andrew,” to which Mandelson replied: “Yes, without Andrew it would not have gone nuclear.”
In an earlier email chain from 2011, it appears Epstein forwarded Mandelson a request for an interview from BBC Radio 4’s Today programme sent to his attorney, Jack Goldberger.
The broadcaster expresses an interest in speaking to him about “stories which are circulating, however inaccurately, about both him and Prince Andrew, the Duke of York”.
Lord Mandelson replies: “No!!”
