Elon Musk has announced that Twitter has replaced it’s iconic bird logo with X in the latest controversial shake up of the social media company.
Twitter’s new chief executive Linda Yaccarino tweeted a picture of company’s new logo – a white X on a black background – on Sunday night.
In the accompanying post, she added: “X is here! Let’s do this.
“Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate.
“Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.”
The rebranding comes after Musk revealed on Sunday that he was looking to change Twitter’s logo, tweeting: “And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.”
The billionaire tech-entrepreneur has since changed his profile picture on the app to the company’s new logo, and changed his bio to ‘X.com’ – which now redirects to twitter.com.
Founded in 2006, Twitter has used the ‘Larry the bird’ branding since it’s early days when the company bought a stock symbol of a light blue bird for $15.
In 2011, Twitter’s co-founder Biz Stone said the design was a tribute to basketball star and Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird.
The rebranding is the latest in a series of controversial moves Elon Musk has made to the platform since completing a £38bn acquisition of the platform.
Twitter courted controversy in July after announcing it was temporarily limiting the number of tweets people can read in a day, as thousands of users reported problems accessing the site.
