Trump says US is extending ceasefire while awaiting proposal from Iran

It comes after last-minute ceasefire talks between the US and Iran looked increasingly uncertain on Tuesday.

US President Donald Trump has said he’s extending the ceasefire with Iran at Pakistan’s request as he waits for a “unified proposal” from the Islamic Republic.

Trump also said the US military will continue its blockade of Iranian ports, as he announced the move in a Truth Social post on Tuesday.

The White House put on hold Vice President JD Vance’s expected trip to Islamabad for a second round of talks as Tehran, at least for the time being, stopped short of agreeing to further talks.

Here’s Trump’s statement in full:

“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.

“I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”

Also, on Tuesday, a senior Iranian commander warned neighbouring Arab countries to “say goodbye to oil production in the Middle East” if they allow the US to resume attacking Iran from their territory.

Since the war started, fighting has killed at least 3,375 people in Iran and more than 2,290 in Lebanon. Twenty-three people have died in Israel and more than a dozen in Gulf Arab states.
