Historic animals from the Ice Age have been brought back to life as part of the Royal Mint’s latest 50p coin collection.

The Royal Mint launched the first coin in its Ice Age Giants series on Monday, as part of the Tales of the Earth collection in collaboration with the Natural History Museum.

The new three-coin collection will feature the steppe mammoth, woolly rhino, and giant deer, each on their own coin.

Around 2.6m years ago, large mammals known as megafauna flourished in the grassy plains amongst glaciers.

One of the largest beasts during this period was the mammuthus trogontherii, also known as steppe mammoth.

Enormous in size, the herbivore had an average shoulder height of four metres and weighed an average of ten tonnes.

Each has been brought back to life by renowned British paleo-artist, Robert Nicholls, with expert guidance from professor Adrian Lister at the Natural History Museum.

The official steppe mammoth 2024 50p coin will be available to purchase from Monday, with prices starting from £12.
