The US Department of Justice has published thousands of its files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
It was a long-anticipated release of documents for its potential to reveal new details about the late sex offender and his connections to powerful people.
The files include thousands of photographs, call logs, court records and other documents, many of which are redacted.
But the dump on Friday evening was far from complete with hundreds of thousands more files expected to be released over the coming weeks.
That is despite legal requirements that all information from the Justice Department’s Epstein investigation be released by Friday.

So, what do we know so far?
The photographs released in these files have been taken by the FBI during searches of Epstein’s homes in New York City and the US Virgin Islands.
Those photographs feature many celebrities, including Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Mick Jagger.
There is no evidence any of the people who appear in these images engaged in illegal activity or knew of any wrongdoing.
The photos and other files have been heavily redacted, including whole pages and even whole documents.
A grand jury testimony of 119 pages was entirely redacted.
That has angered some of Epstein’s survivors and politicians who have accused the Trump administration of trying to hide information.
Who features in the new documents?

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor
The release of documents includes at least one photo of the former Prince Andrew.
He appears to have been pictured reclining across the legs of five people with his head near a woman’s lap.
In the undated image, which is a photograph of a picture in a photo frame, convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell appears to peer down and smile at the former duke, who is smiling with his eyes closed.
The picture was released without additional context, and it is unclear when or where it was taken, who took it, or what was happening at the time.

Sarah Ferguson
Andrew’s ex-wife, the former Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, also features in multiple photographs.
One image captures Sarah Ferguson on a sofa and another smiling outdoors.
She is pictured in both photos alongside women whose identities have been redacted.

Bill Clinton
Many of the most discussed photos from this release feature former Democratic President Bill Clinton.
One photo shows Clinton in a pool with British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who has been convicted of child sex offences in relation to Epstein, and with another person whose face is redacted.
And another photo shows Clinton in a hot tub with a woman whose face is redacted.

Other photos show Clinton on a private plane, including one with a woman seated next to him with her arm around him. Her face is redacted from the photo.
The Justice Department did not explain how these photos were related to the criminal investigation.
Clinton has never been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.
Clinton has acknowledged that he travelled on Epstein’s private jet but said, through a spokesperson, that he had no knowledge of the late financier’s crimes.
In a statement, Clinton spokesman Angel Ureña said the White House was “shielding themselves from what comes next or from what they’ll try and hide forever”.
“They can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton,” Ureña said.
“Never has been, never will be.”
Another photo shows Clinton with the late pop star Michael Jackson, singer Diana Ross and a woman whose face is redacted.

Michael Jackson
Pop star Michael Jackson appears in multiple photos, including one showing him standing next to a smiling Epstein and another with singer Diana Ross, Bill Clinton and a woman whose identity has been redacted.
It is unclear when or where these photographs were taken.

Sir Mick Jagger
Several of the released photographs also include Rolling Stones front man Sir Mick Jagger.
One of these images includes the singer dining next to Ghislaine Maxwell.
Once again, these images have been released without context and do not imply any wrongdoing.

Donald Trump
The US President features very scarcely in this release of documents, considering how many pictures of Epstein and Donald Trump have been released previously from when the pair were friends.
One image released on Friday showed Trump and many others arrayed across a desk and in a drawer.
But the other photos had previously been made public.
Though Trump has not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, he has argued there is nothing to see in the files and the public should focus on other issues.
Trump did not address the release of these files in comments he made to the media on Friday night.
When will the rest of the files be released?
The Justice Department said it would continue releasing the remaining several hundred thousand files over the coming weeks.
Some lawmakers have blasted the Trump administration for failing to produce all the documents required under the law.
Senator Jeff Merkley said that by disregarding the 30-day deadline, the administration was denying justice to Epstein’s victims.
He added he was “exploring all avenues and legal tools to get justice for the victims and transparency”.
