A teenage girl has died after being attacked by a shark while swimming in a popular surfers spot in Queensland, Australia.

Queensland Ambulance said they responded to a “serious shark bite incident” at Woorim Beach, Bribie Island, on Monday at 4.55pm local time.

Police said the 17-year-old sustained “life-threatening injuries” which she succumbed to shortly after, ITV News’ affiliate Channel 7 News reported.

They said a report is being prepared for the coroner.

Local resident Christopher Potter described the news of the attack as “absolutely shocking”.

“A lot of people have swimming groups round here, they do swim along here in the morning and afternoon,” he told Channel 7 News.

“I’ve been here for many many years and I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve never heard of this happening.

“We all know in the ocean here there is lots of sharks, but you just don’t expect this to happen”.

Woorim Ocean Beach is a popular destination for surfers and is the closest surf beach north of Brisbane.

It is the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year.

Earlier in January, witnesses reported seeing 28-year-old Lance Appleby being attacked by a shark near Adelaide, south Australia.
