A serving conservative MP has been asked to stay away from parliament after being arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault.
Officers from Scotland Yard conducted a two-year investigation into claims made between 2002 and 2009 against the unnamed individual.
A spokesperson for The Met said all of the alleged offences took place in London over the seven-year period.
Specialist investigators have now taken over the case, with the accused asked to steer clear of the House of Commons until a probe can be concluded.
He is yet to be charged over the alleged crimes, The Sun has reported.
A police spokesperson said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in a public office.”
A total of 56 MPs are reportedly at the centre of probes into their conduct amid a wave of sexual misconduct allegations.
Chief Whip Chris Heaton Harris said no further comment would be made until the investigation was closed.
A Conservative whips office spokeswoman said: “The Chief Whip has asked that the MP concerned does not attend the Parliamentary Estate while an investigation is ongoing.
“Until the conclusion of the investigation we will not be commenting further.”
