The Royal Family have cancelled plans for their traditional pre-Christmas lunch this week amid concerns over the rise of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

The plans have been shelved as a precautionary measure as it would put members of the family’s Christmas arrangements at risk.

It is understood the Queen still intends to host immediate family at Sandringham Estate over the Christmas period.

A total of 78,610 Covid cases were recorded yesterday across the UK – the highest number since the pandemic began.

This included 4671 cases of the Omicron strain of the virus.
