Rob Reiner and wife found dead at LA home in 'apparent homicide'

Acclaimed US director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife have been found dead at their home in Los Angeles in an “apparent homicide”.

Reiner, who is known for hugely successful films such as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and This is Spinal Tap, was 78.

The filmmaker and his wife, Michele Singer, were found dead at their Brentwood home on Sunday, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told ITV News’ US Partner CNN.

In a news conference on Sunday, Los Angeles Police Department Captain Mike Bland confirmed authorities were investigating an “apparent homicide”.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it responded to a medical aid request shortly after 3.30pm and found a 78-year-old man and 68-year-old woman dead inside.

As well as directing some of the most memorable films of the 1980s and 90s, Reiner starred in a number of sitcoms.

His role as Meathead All in the Family catapulted him to fame and won him two Emmy Awards.

Monty Python actor Eric Idle paid tribute, calling Reiner a “lovely man” in a post on X.

He said: “I spoke to him last night for over an hour. I always enjoyed his company.

“I met him at his Dad’s in 1975. He was telling me about fiming at Stonehenge and his thoughts for the future.

“This is so awful. I shall miss him. A clever, talented and very thoughtful man. So awful.”

The Lord Of The Rings star Elijah Wood, who appeared in Reiner’s 1994 family film North, posted: “Horrified to hear of the passing of Rob Reiner and his wonderful wife Michelle. So much love to their kids and family.”

Meanwhile, former president Barack Obama said: “Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen.

“But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people – and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”
