The Princess Royal “has sustained minor injuries and concussion” in an incident involving a horse, STV News understands.
Princess Anne was at the Gatcombe Park estate on Sunday evening, Buckingham Palace said. She remains in a Bristol hospital for observation.
It is understood the Princess was walking in the estate in an area with horses when the incident occurred with her suffering head injuries consistent with an impact from a horse’s head or legs.
A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said the Princess Royal is recovering well, is in a comfortable condition and is being kept in hospital as a precautionary measure for further observation.
On doctors’ advice, her engagements for the week ahead will be postponed. She had been due to travel to Canada, it is understood these plans will be impacted.
However, the Japanese State Visit will go ahead as planned although Princess Anne will be unable to attend the State banquet on Tuesday.
“Her Royal Highness sends her apologies to any who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result,” a spokesperson said.
“Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precautionary measure for observation and is expected to make a full and swift recovery.
“Sir Tim Laurence accompanied Her Royal Highness to hospital.
“The King has been kept closely informed and joins the whole Royal Family in sending his fondest love and well-wishes to The Princess for a speedy recovery.”
