The Ukrainian president has been involved in a car accident but has not been seriously hurt, officials have said.

Volodymyr Zelensky was examined by a doctor following the collision which involved his own car and escort vehicles.

The incident in the capital Kyiv happened following a battlefield visit as Ukrainian forces continue their counter-offensive in Russian occupied territories in the east of the country.

An investigation is under way by Ukrainian law enforcement, a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson, Sergii Nykyforov, wrote on social media: “A car collided with a car of the President of Ukraine and escort cars in Kyiv.

“Medics accompanying the head of state, provided the driver of the passenger car emergency assistance and passed [them into the care of] the ambulance.

“The President was examined by a doctor, no serious damage was detected. All circumstances of the accident will be found out by law enforcement officers.”

In a statement regarding the country’s counter-offensive on Thursday morning, President Zelensky said: “The path to the return of all our territories is getting clearer.

“We see the contours of restoration of our state’s territorial integrity. We know this is a hard path, but it is possible to pass it. And we are doing that.”
