Former football coach and serial paedophile Barry Bennell has died in prison, the Ministry of Justice has said.

The former Crewe Alexandra coach and Manchester City scout was sentenced to 30 years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court in February 2018 for 52 offences committed against 12 boys he coached between 1979 and 1991.

Bennell had been convicted in the United States during 1995 of sexually abusing a 13-year-old British boy on a tour.

Judge Clement Goldstone QC described Bennell as “the devil incarnate”. He was sentenced to a further four years in 2020.

Complainants told how he had a “power hold” over them as they dreamed of becoming professional footballers.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “Prisoner Barry Bennell died at HMP Littlehey on September 16, 2023. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”
