A spherical egg has been purchased after its “one in a billion” discovery in a Scottish supermarket.
Ed Pownall, from Lambourn, in Berkshire, shelled out £150 for the egg after it was put up for auction at Thomson Roddick Callan auction house.
The egg was found by a Scottish woman in a box of 15 she bought while doing her weekly shop in Asda in Ayr.
David Miller, who works at the auction house, described the discovery as a “one in a billion” occurrence and said previous similar items had sold for hundreds.
Mr Pownall became aware of the egg going on sale through an STV News article, and decided to put a bid in while at his local pub.
After securing his purchase, the egg was delivered via courier packed in bubble wrap, polystyrene and packing peanuts to protect it.
“After I sent the lot details to the courier, they called me and asked if I was joking.
“They said they had never come across anything like this before,” he added.
Mr Pownall said he hopes to preserve the egg with a technique called “egg blowing”.
“I believe there’s a thing called egg blowing, where you put a little hole in the bottom and get the yolk out,” he said.
The reaction from Mr Pownall’s friends and family has been mixed adding that his youngest daughter “still doesn’t get it”.
“It’s a bit of fun, I brought it down to the local pub at the request of the landlord too.”
