Historical figures on banknotes are set to be replaced by images of the UK’s wildlife, with the public allowed to choose what should be featured.
For more than 50 years, notable people from Britain’s history have been showcased on the notes, such as Sir Winston Churchill, Alan Turing, and Jane Austen.
But the Bank of England said this week that the change to wildlife creates an opportunity to celebrate different aspects of the UK.
It also makes it more difficult for the notes to be counterfeited while making security features more distinguishable, the central bank said.
The decision comes after a consultation over what theme should feature on the notes. Wildlife came top with a vote share of 60%, followed by architecture and landmarks (56%), notable historical figures (38%), arts, culture, and sports (30%), innovation (23%), and noteworthy milestones (19%).
It was based on 44,000 responses from online surveys, emails, and designs submitted by schools and the general public.
A second consultation will run this summer to gather views on the specific wildlife that should feature, which can include plants, landscapes, and animals.
It will be several years before the banknotes are issued, and they will continue to show a portrait of the monarch.
Representation of the Home Nations – England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – will be an important factor of the design.
Victoria Cleland, chief cashier at the Bank of England, said nature is a great choice “from a banknote authentication perspective” and “means we can showcase the UK’s rich and varied wildlife on the next series of banknotes”.
“I look forward to hearing about the public’s favourite wildlife during our forthcoming summer consultation.”
The Conservative Party was less enthusiastic in its response to the new theme.
Alex Burghart MP, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: “It is deeply depressing that under Labour our national heroes are considered too ‘divisive’ to be on the banknotes. Most countries celebrate their history – ours should too.”
“Only the Conservatives, under new leadership, will restore pride in our history and common-sense governance.”
