Google to rename Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America after Donald Trump order

Even before taking office, President Trump ordered the renaming of the body of water bordered by the southern United States, Mexico, and Cuba.

Google has announced it will rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on its maps, following an order from Donald Trump, once the US government updates its official listings.

The company said on Monday that it will make the changes once the government changes the Geographic Names Information System, a database of over one million geographic features, to reflect the new name for the body of water.

The change will only appear on the US version of Google Maps, while other countries’ versions will continue use the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’.

Even before taking office, President Trump ordered the renaming of the body of water bordered by the southern United States, Mexico, and Cuba.

He also directed that America’s highest mountain peak revert back to its original name, Mount McKinley. Google has said it will update its maps to reflect these changes too, if they become official.

“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” Google said in a post on X.

Denali, the name preferred by Alaska Natives, was restored in 2015 by former President Barack Obama.

The mountain had been named Mount McKinley in the late 19th century by a gold prospector as a tribute to America’s 25th President William McKinley.
